Work as an Identity in the New Year

As we move into yet another year, the first question we should contemplate is where work as an identity fits into my New Year’s resolutions.  Keep in mind that the first act in human history is God working.  God was working before creation.  Genesis One describes a God that is continually working.  God is always moving; He is always doing something.  Work is a declaration of God’s identity.  Our identity is grounded in God’s identity, which is that of a working God.  So, what should we resolve to do in the new year regarding work?

Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

REST

If the devil can’t make you bad, he will make you busy.

Before we can resolve how much to do, we must understand how much we can rest from doing.  Rest is not the act of doing nothing; it is the rejuvenation of our soul so that we can continue to work; resting in work, not from work; rest is the natural extension of work.  To live in synchronicity with God is to rest.  There is dignity in all work; all work is dignified in the eyes of God.  Rest is not the equivalent of doing nothing.

Genesis 2:2, "By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.  Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done."

God rested from the work of creating.  Rest can be listening, seeing, thinking, or praying; all can be acts of worship if centered on God.  Resting can be mowing the lawn if that is your way of relaxing.  Resting can be any activity that brings you closer to God.

You can mistake adrenaline for the power of the spirit.  If there is no rest, there is no sustainable productivity.  Set aside a day every week where you let God guide your activities.  Spend time living with God, not just for God.

AMBITION

I am excellent not because of who I compete against but because of who I work for.

Another characteristic we must understand about ourselves is ambition.  How much and what kind of ambition should I have?  Ambition is an attribute of God’s identity.  In Genesis, God said it was very good.  He was impressed with His own creation.  He recognized a job well done.

Genesis 1:10, 1:12, 1:18, 1:25, "And God saw that it was good."
Genesis 1: 31, "God saw all that he had made, and it was very good"

Do we believe that our work matters because we matter, or is it the other way around; we matter only if our work matters.  Our satisfaction does not come from the work we are assigned, but the fact that we matter is why God gave us work to do.  In everything we do, physical work, thinking, reading, or listening, we are to glorify God in the way we do it.  Work is a resource for us to demonstrate who God is.  We are flawed stewards, not proprietors.  Everything we have is God’s, given to us to manage, not to possess.  Our work is a resource God gives us to manage, not own.  Our ambition should be centered on doing a job well because it is an attribute of who we are in Christ, not because it gets us ahead in the world.

Colossians 3:17, "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

Nothing defames God more than a lazy Christian at work.  Your work is a gift from God to expand His kingdom here on Earth.  Not doing your best demonstrates to others a lazy God who does not value work.

BOREDOM

Discipline is the pathway to freedom.

Boredom, under-challenged or misplaced priorities, leads to arrogance and despair.  Burnout is not a function of overwork but a function of how we work; where do we find our identity?  Our identity in Christ is about putting our emotions between the banks of the river.  Because what we are doing amplifies God’s blessings in our life, not our worldly identity, we need to get up from self-introspection, put God’s plan for our life in gear, and think about our concept of identity later.  We can not let the world’s view of success interfere with God’s plan.  Burnout may be a manifestation of being misaligned with God’s plan for your life.  It is not the work itself but the nature of the work.

Ephesians 5:15-16, "Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil."

Trying to satisfy the world’s hunger for success is not sustainable; if what God gave you is not enough, or if God Himself is not enough, then nothing is enough.

Who is your boss?  To whom are you responsible?  Who are you afraid of disappointing?

WE ARE NEVER NOT REPRESENTING JESUS

Accountability, Attitude, and Responsibility belong to us.  We never are not representing Jesus.  We own excellence.  Our attitude is not determined by our work context but by who we serve.  We are the salt of the world, and we are the light of the world;  we are not becoming salt and light; we are.  The way we work is an expression of who we are in Christ.

If we allow our success to go to our head because we identify with the work we do, not who we serve, we will constantly be dealing with exhaustion, depression, and a lack of self-worth.  Everything comes from God for use to glorify Him.

In 2024, resolve to reflect who you are in Christ.

Ecclesiastes 2:24-26, "There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labor.  This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.  "

The New Beginning

Every January first, we think, “This is the new beginning.” It is the start of a new year. It is a chance to change, erase last year’s mistakes and start afresh. We have just celebrated the birth of Christ, the new beginning.

Isaiah 9:2, “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.”

My sister had this taped to the back of her Christmas card to me:

“This Christmas, mend a quarrel. Seek out a forgotten friend. Dismiss suspicion and replace it with trust. Write a letter. Give a soft answer. Encourage Youth. Manifest your loyalty in word and deed. Keep a promise. Forgo a grudge. Forgive an enemy. Apologize. Try to understand. Examine your demands on others. Think first of someone else. Be kind. Be gentle. Laugh a little more. Express your gratitude. Welcome a stranger. Gladden the heart of a child. Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the earth. Speak your love and then speak it again.” – Howard H. Hunter.

That is quite a bucket list for 2023. ( download it here) There are so many items on the list that I must attend to. So many, not so many wrongs that need righting, as neglects that need attention. Great people in my life that make my life worthwhile that I treat as common. I celebrate their special occasions, but every day I treat them as a constant. I forget that life is fleeting. Bad things happen to good people. I can not count on having a tomorrow to tell them how much they mean to me.

James 1:17, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

Gifts

There are so many good gifts that God has bestowed on me that have just become part of me. I have lived with them so long that I treat them as inseparable from my existence. They are not seen as gifts but as attributes. I somehow own them. That must change.

In 2023 I need to stop treating God’s gifts to me, whether it be people or things, as some privilege or status I have earned. Everything I have or ever will have is a gift from God. It is mine only to expand His kingdom here on earth. I should show gratitude for all of it every day. Tomorrow may never come.

James 4:13-24, “Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.”  Why you do not even know what will happen tomorrow? What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”  As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.  If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is a sin for them.”

New Beginning

The new beginning I seek is to live my life as if it was a gift from God. This includes the bad things that happen to me. Not that God would ever visit evil on me, but it happens, and God is there if I call upon Him. Christ has made me a new person. I need to start living my life like I believe that is true. Can I do all the things on Howard Hunter’s list? To be honest, I doubt it. But I can try.

The key to doing good is not the act itself but to whom you give the glory. What person do they see when I do what God has asked of me? Is it me, or is it the image of God? Are they drawn to me, or are they drawn to the person who made me new?

Matthew 6:2, ‘So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”

If I believe that everything I am, is a gift from God to serve His kingdom, I will be content with the outcome.

Colossians 3:23-24, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Benediction

Every day is a new beginning. I wish you the very best this coming year. I pray that come December 31, 2023, you will look back on this year and see your progress. Perfection isn’t ours to obtain. It is only for us to use what we have been given to do what we can.

Hebrews 13:20-21, “Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.”

A Quick Thought for 2021

1 Corinthians 9:24, “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.”

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

May 2021 be filled with visions of greatness followed by the efforts of zealots. Do not resolve to do better or be better, just get up every morning and do it. Dreams are for those who sleep, vision are for those who achieve. Organization don’t publish dream statements, they publish their vision statement. Visions are filled with plans, and tasks, and goals. Remember that true greatness is not about today, or tomorrow, or next week, or next year; it is about a life worth living. Do not measure yourself by others, but measure yourself by the potential God gave you.

May you look back on 2021 to see that you accomplished the impossible, or at least the unbelievable.

New Years – God Said “It was good”

Genesis 1:31, “Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!…..”

God does not waste time making second rate things or moments without meaning. God did not create a person or moment on this earth that He did not say, “it is very good…”. Anytime you start to believe otherwise, you don’t understand the nature of the God of the universe.

CREATION

Colossians 1:16, “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.”

Before God created the universe, he sketched out every molecule. He detailed every man, woman, child, plant, animal, every cell, every microcell,  every nano cell, and the billions of planets and stars that will ever exist. God knew that we needed a Savior, and God knew exactly when we would need Him. Then He created; then He started everything in motion. And He said, “that is very good.”

Colossians 1:15, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”

The complexity of the world we live in is enormous. I met the brother-in-law of a friend of mine over Thanksgiving. He is a cardiovascular research scientist working with the Lymphatic system, a subsystem of the circulatory system. He works in an invisible world that is essential to human health. God created proteins that provide for the health of tiny valves within that system required for our existence. When I tried to visualize how God can scale down the laws of physics to such a microscopic level and still have everything work as it should, it’s inconceivable. 

John 17:24, “Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.”

CHRIST IS BORN

When I think about the importance and timing of Jesus’ birth, ordained before the world was born, the lymphatic system becomes mundane. When I think of the significance of the arrival of our Savior and the birth of you and I, as being very good in God’s eye, I get a chill. Christ saved all of us from permanent separation from God. God created each of us to save someone from that same fate.

Do you not look at your birth with the same importance and reverence as you do Christmas? No, we could never match the glory and majesty of Christ’s importance here on earth. We were not born to save all of humankind through the gift of forgiveness. But we do have a mission, and that mission is just as important to someone out there. God, through Christ, created the building block of our redemption. God gave us a path, through Christ, back to Him; we, all of us, must choose that path. It is this last part that makes your creation so important.

OUR ROLE

Romans 10:14, “But how can they call on someone if they haven’t trusted in him? And how can they trust in someone if they haven’t heard about him? And how can they hear about someone if no one is proclaiming him?”

We cannot save as Christ saved, but we can lead someone to Him so that He may save them. Just as there is not a moment wasted by God, there is not a moment in our lives that is insignificant. People are always watching us to see God’s glory. When He created us, it was good; the act itself was good, not the person. That person was tainted as a byproduct of the fall. But we were created with a purpose of great importance to God; He desires that we live out that purpose.

Job 42:2, “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.

As Christian, we need to recognize and accept that we were created for a purpose, and that purpose is to glorify God from generation to generation. We accomplish that purpose by spreading the gospel both in actions and words.

Have you ever thought of celebrating your birthday with the same significance as you celebrate Christmas? You cannot save the world, but you can save it for someone. Remember throughout 2021, when God created you, he said, “it was very good.”

Matthew 5:16, ”In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
